Three Tips For Buying And Building Your First Plastic Scale Model

This post is for those who have yet to take the plunge to plastic scale modelling. The world of scale model can be an enjoyable and fun experience.  When I looked back, I see there are a lot of things that can be done differently that can make building plastic scale model more fun. Here are a few tips for you.

Tips One, choose a model that you like. If you like cars, then go for a car kit, if you like military aircraft, go for aircraft kit, if you like building tanks, then go for tank kit, if you like ships, then go for a ship kit. This may seem obvious, but some people still buy randomly. Choose a kit that has few parts, usually on the box, it is stated how many parts are there inside the kit. The fewer the better because it will be quite fast to build.

Tips Two, buy only basic tools. The basic tools for construction are a cutting knife, a small cutter will do and a glue, it is best to buy modelling glue, but if not, a super glue will do just fine.  For painting, just use the tools and paints available around your house, or buy some oil paints and one small to medium sized brush. The key here is to go cheap. Unless you want to be a professional scale modeller.

Tips Three, follow the assembly instructions. For your first few kits, just build out of the box as veteran scale modeller would say. Do not worry about accuracy of the build or the painting scheme. Just Have Fun.

Build a few kits, until you get the basic steps of building and painting. Experiment with how you build your kits. You can start with building the kit first, then painting it later. For the next kit you can try painting it first, while still on its sprue, then build it. Find which method works best for you.

Once you find the best method which suits you, then you can start investing in special tools and supplies for scale modelling. Start visiting your local hobby shop, visit internet forums and hangout with the scale modelling community.

Always start slow and cheap. Most importantly have fun!
